Welcome to our technical guide on configuring snap settings in cadvilla. In this video tutorial, we show you how to define and edit the general settings for snapping objects to fit your drafting requirements. Furthermore, we clarify the visual representation of snap points and explain how to select specific object categories. Consequently, mastering these adjustments will ensure precise cursor movements and improve overall accuracy during your drawing process.

1. Accessing the Snap Settings
There are two primary options to open the menu for the snap settings.
[0:41] Option 1: Accessing via the Main Menu
- First, open the top menu and select
Settings. - Next, choose
General...from the dropdown sequence. - Finally, click on
Snapin the left-hand navigation pane to open the setup dialog.
[1:11] Option 2: Accessing via the Toolbar (Quick Access)
- Alternatively, you can find the
Snapsymbol directly in the upper toolbar. - Left mouse click: This action simply activates or deactivates the snap function globally.
- Right mouse click: Conversely, performing a right mouse click on the magnet icon opens the
Snapsettings menu immediately.

2. Detailed Snap Configurations
Inside the settings menu, you can precisely control the behavior of the snap functionality.
[1:34] Defining the Snap Radius
- Here, you can define the exact
Snap radius (pixel). This specific value determines how close the mouse cursor must be to an object before the snap point triggers. - We recommend setting a radius between 5 and 10 pixels (the tutorial explicitly uses 8 pixels).
[1:48] Visual Representation of Snap Points
- Cadvilla visually differentiates the type of geometric element you are snapping to:
- Circle: If you snap on a line or an edge, the snapping point will be displayed as a blue circle.
- Cross: If you snap on a specific point (for instance, a line end point, a line intersection point, or a grid point), the snap point will be displayed as a red cross.
[2:25] Selecting and Deselecting Snap Objects
- In the lower section of the window, you can select or deselect specific object categories for snapping.
- For example, if you uncheck
Roof constructions, you will not be able to snap to any roof elements. - By clicking the plus or minus symbols, you can open or close the object tree to manage subcategories like
Construction Elements(e.g.,SupportsorFoundations). - Tip: To quickly activate snapping for all available elements, simply press the
Allbutton.
3. Saving Settings Permanently
[3:23] Save as Default
- To ensure your adjusted snap settings remain active for later projects or after restarting the software, click the
Save as defaultbutton (represented by the diskette icon). - Afterward, confirm your configuration by pressing
OK.
4. Practical Examples and Summary
[3:39] Practical Demonstration
- The video provides applied examples of snapping to various elements. It cleanly illustrates how the cursor reacts to grid points, continuous lines, and intersecting line points.
[5:03] Summary
- Cross symbol: Displayed when snapping on a grid point, a line end point, or a line intersection point.
- Circle symbol: Displayed when snapping directly on a line.
- Access paths: Remember that settings are reached either via
Settings>General...>Snapor by executing a right mouse click on theSnapsymbol.
