Tutorial: Room Labeling & Texturing (Floor Area, Labeling, Transferring Room Properties)

In this comprehensive video tutorial, we will show you how to effectively create, position, and define room labels using cadvilla. Furthermore, we will explore the various options for texturing and visually adjusting floors in the 2D top view. You will also learn practical workflow tips on how to efficiently transfer room properties to other spaces. By following these detailed steps, you can ensure that your floor plans are clearly labeled and professionally presented.

Important note in advance: Please wait with changing the room labeling, positioning the room texts, and adjusting the floor thickness until ALL walls in your project are correctly positioned and will not be moved or deleted anymore.

Here is the basic process summarized step by step:

1. Opening Room Properties and Changing Names

[01:21] Call up Properties

  • First of all, deselect the grid and adjust the line widths in order to get a better overview and to snap elements more easily.
  • Select the desired room in the floor plan (it will be highlighted in red).
  • Right-click inside the selected room and choose Properties from the context menu.
  • Alternatively: You can simply double-click on the selected room to open the properties dialog.

[01:12] Define Room Names

  • In the properties window, ensure the RoomnumberGeneral tab is active.
  • Under the Name field, you can easily enter or change the designation of the room (e.g., change it from “Room 6” to “Entry” or “Laundry”).

2. Adjusting the Labeling (Prefixes and Calculated Values)

[01:48] Selecting Values

  • Next, navigate to the Roomnumber > Labeling tab located in the left pane of the properties window.
  • Here you can check off various calculation values that you want to be displayed directly on the floor plan. For instance, ensure Name is selected, and additionally check the box for Floor area or Living area.

[02:20] Adding a Prefix

  • In order to provide more context to the numbers on your plan, you can type a text into the Prefix column right next to your chosen value.
  • Example: Click on the prefix field next to “Floor area” and type Area .
  • Result in the plan: Instead of just displaying “12.50 m²”, the text will now accurately read “Area 12.50 m²”.

3. Text Formatting and Positioning Options

[03:41] Text Positioning Behavior

  • Navigate to the Room LabelingGeneral tab (specifically under the “Floor” section) to control the behavior of the text block.
  • automatic positioning: If this is checked, the text always remains dynamically centered in the room, even if walls are moved later. Note: As soon as you manually move a room text, this option is automatically deactivated. Consequently, the position of the room text changes from a dynamic placement to a static one.
  • automatic text: When this is active, the content of the text updates automatically whenever there are structural changes (e.g., if the square footage changes due to a moved wall).

[03:58] Font Style and Size

  • To change the appearance of the text, navigate to Room LabelingInput Text to open the font properties.
  • Here you can customize the font style, color, and text style (bold, italic).
  • Link to scale: Under the font properties, you can select the Link to scale checkbox.
    • Advantage: The font size adapts automatically when printing, significantly improving the clarity of the plan.
    • Example: If you set a Font size of 0.175 m at a scale of 1:50, the printed text will be exactly 3.5 mm high. If you subsequently change the scale to 1:100, the text will proportionally adjust to be 1.75 mm high on the paper.

4. 2D Floor Display (Fill Styles and Patterns)

[06:35] Choose a Fill Style

  • Select the desired room in the floor plan.
  • Right-click and open the Properties.
  • Navigate to Floor > General> Material (e.g .Dielen Hell) and then switch to the 2D display tab.
  • Click on the button representing the current visual style to modify it. Here, you have several choices for the Fill style:
    • Monochrome / Pattern / Color bleeding (Gradient): These base styles are available in all cadvilla versions.
    • Texture / 2D Pattern: These advanced visual styles are only included in the cadvilla professional and cadvilla professional plus versions.
  • Press OK, to confirm the selections.

[07:39] Activate the Filled Display

  • Crucial step: So that your chosen fill (color, pattern, or texture) is actually visible in the floor plan, you must check the Filled 2D display in top views box, which is located under the 2D display on the General tab.

[12:26] Adjusting Textures and Patterns

  • If you have selected a “Texture” or a “2D Pattern”, you can further refine its appearance.
  • Under the Change texture coordinates section, you are able to specify the exact width and height of the texture tile. Additionally, you can adjust the angle (e.g., setting it to 90 degrees) in order to change the laying direction of wooden floors or tiles.

5. Layer Construction and Floor Thickness

[15:34] Define the Layer Construction

  • To modify the physical thickness of the floor, go to the Layer construction tab within the Floor properties.
  • Here you can see the individual layers of the floor. By selecting a specific layer (such as the floor pavement), you can effortlessly change its thickness, name, or material.
  • Caution: If you increase or decrease the overall thickness of the floor (e.g., from 4 cm to 10 cm), the level of the finished floor changes automatically. Consequently, this simple change can have a major impact on door heights and stair connections in your 3D model.

6. Transferring Room Properties to Other Rooms

To save time and avoid having to configure each room individually, you can quickly transfer predefined properties to other spaces.

[18:03] Copy Properties

  • First, select the fully configured roomlabel of the room that will act as your source (make sure the text is unselected).
  • Right-click and choose Transfer properties from the context menu.
  • A dialog box opens. Here, you must choose only the specific properties you wish to transfer (e.g., Layer construction and Text / Font style under Room labeling).
  • Important: Make sure to deselect the General and Calculation tabs. Otherwise, every target room will adopt the exact same name (like “Living room”) and calculation methods.
  • Afterward, click on Next.

[18:58] Select Target Rooms

  • In the next dialog, choose Manual target selection and then click the by target selection button.
  • Now, carefully click on all the rooms in your floor plan one after another that should receive these copied properties.
  • Finally, confirm your selection by pressing ENTER on your keyboard, and then click on Finish to complete the process.
