Find the layer used for a specific element in the project

Have you lost track in your extensive cadvilla project and can no longer remember exactly on which layer or on which floor a specific building component is located? Especially in complex plans with many levels and layers, quickly finding elements can be challenging. Fortunately, the 3D house planning software offers a very simple and intuitive function to read this information directly from the 3D model. In this short tutorial, we will show you how to identify the layer used for any element in seconds and, if necessary, activate it directly. This way, you always keep full control over your project structure.

Proceed as follows:

1. Locate the element in the 3D view

  • First, open a 3D view of your current project.
  • Now simply move the mouse pointer (cursor) over the element you are looking for in the 3D model. In our example, we assume you are searching for the data of a specific surface element.
  • Hover the mouse over the component for a brief moment without pressing any button.

2. Read the information from the tooltip

  • A small information window (tooltip) will then open automatically directly at the mouse pointer.
  • In this window, all important data about the exact position and structure of the element is listed clearly. You will see:
    • Label: The type of element (e.g., Surface Elements).
    • Building: The parent building it is assigned to (e.g., Building 1).
    • Floor: The level in which it was drawn (e.g., Ground Floor).
    • Layer: The specific layer within the floor (e.g., Roof surroundings).

3. Set the found layer directly as active

If you now want to edit or delete the element, the corresponding layer must be active. This can also be done via a practical shortcut directly from the 3D view:

  • Hold down the CTRL key on your keyboard.
  • At the same time, click the desired element with the left mouse button.
  • Result: The layer in which the element is located is immediately set as the active layer (marked in red) in the project manager on the right side.

Tip: As soon as the correct layer has been activated in this way, you can easily select the element with a left click and then move it, adjust its properties, or delete it using the DEL key.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

To identify the layer of an element, hover your mouse over the object in a 3D view and wait briefly. A tooltip opens automatically and shows the element’s building, floor, and layer.

Hold CTRL and left-click the element in the 3D view. The corresponding layer is then set as the active layer in the project manager (marked in red).

In most cases, the object is located on a layer that is currently not active. Activate the correct layer via CTRL + left-click in the 3D view, and then select the object normally to edit it or remove it with DEL.
